Are you ready to live-tweet your way down the Yellow Brick Road? It looks like The Wiz—not The Music Man—might be NBC's next live musical event, according to Deadline. NBC honcho Robert Greenblatt said at the Television Critics Association Press Tour on January 16 that the network has optioned rights to the Tony-winning musical. Still in the running is The Music Man, which was previously reported as the network's pick for this year.
The project would follow in the footsteps of the 2013’s mega-successful The Sound of Music Live! and last year’s less (but still respectably) successful Peter Pan Live!. Also in the works, reportedly, is a live presentation of Aaron Sorkin's A Few Good Men. Meanwhile, Fox has announced that they intend to bring a live version of Grease to the small screen later this year.
The Wiz features a score by Charles Smalls and a book by William F. Brown. The musical follows the beloved L. Frank Baum story of Dorothy and her adventures in Oz, but with a rock and soul revamp. The show premiered on Broadway in 1975 and went on to win seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical. The 1978 film adaptation starred Diana Ross, Michael Jackson and Lena Horne. The last major New York production took place in 2009 as part of New York City Center's Encores! program and starred Grammy winner Ashanti, Aladdin Tony winner James Monroe Iglehart, If/Then's LaChanze, Joshua Henry and more.
