Marking his last time on The Old Vic stage whilst Artistic Director, Kevin Spacey will reprise his performance as Clarence Darrow this spring. Directed by Thea Sharrock, Clarence Darrow will begin previews on March 3 and play a limited engagement through April 11.
In David W. Rintels’ one man play, the larger than life Darrow, with his legendary wit, relives some of his pivotal experiences, including the infamous Scopes "Monkey" and "Thrill Killers" trials which established his reputation as a courtroom giant and civil rights hero.
"Clarence Darrow is a role I’ve gotten to play three different times—in a 1992 film about his life, as the lawyer Drummond in Inherit the Wind and finally in the marvellous David Rintel’s one-man play, Clarence Darrow, last year,” Spacey said in a statement. “Perhaps it is true what they say, if you do something long enough you just might get good at it."
Stage and screen great Spacey won the Tony for Lost in Yonkers and was nominated for The Iceman Cometh; he was last seen on Broadway in 2007’s A Moon for the Misbegotten. He won the Oscar for his performances in The Usual Suspects and American Beauty. Spacey is currently starring as Francis Underwood in the Netflix series House of Cards for which he recently won a Golden Globe.
As previously reported, Matthew Warchus will succeed Spacey as Artistic Director this fall.
