Here's a quick roundup of stories you may have missed today.
Groundhog Day Eyes Old Vic Premiere in 2016
We’re watching this tuner carefully—it has Broadway, eventually, written all over it. Matilda composer Tim Minchin and Tony-winning director Matthew Warchus are aiming to do a second workshop of the previously reported Groundhog Day in March. Acccording to The Daily Mail, if it goes well, the stage adaptation of the Bill Murray-led 1993 cult classic film will run at London’s Old Vic in 2016.
Lou Diamond Phillips Takes on Lucifer
Lou Diamond Phillips’ Burning Desire will be presented as a staged reading at St. Malachy’s Church at The Actors Chapel on January 28. The stage and screen star penned the modern parable on his commute while he performed on Broadway in The King and I. The romantic comedy is told in two acts through the puppeterring antics of Lucifer, played by Phillips. The event will also star Cassidy Freeman (Smallville) and Jacob Tyler Moore (Shameless). Some cast!
Watch David Hyde Pierce Talk It Shoulda Been You
Frasier alum David Hyde Pierce, who is about to make his Broadway directorial debut with the Tyne Daly-led It Shoulda Been You, recently stopped by The View to chat about the musical, discover he’s not being invited to Daly’s (sometimes strip) poker nights and more. Check out the video below; the show begins previews on March 17 at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre, also starring Harriet Harris, Sierra Boggess and David Burtka.
Streep, Baranski & Ullman Are (Still) Singing for Marshall
No, Meryl Streep, Christine Baranski and Tracey Ullman are not singing in that Follies movie. At least not yet. The divine triumvirate took the 42West stage at the Casting Society of America’s 30th Annual Artios Awards on January 23 to pay tribute to their Into the Woods director Rob Marshall. Check out below their hysterical Sondheim parody as they facetiously lament low budgets, casting flukes and more. Just after the performance, Marshall accepted the Golden Apple Award for his continued collaboration with New York casting directors. The question remains: Did Baranski take the subway to the festival ceremony while looking flawless? Happy weekend!
