Freaky Friday Musical is in the Works
A stage adaptation of Freaky Friday is to receive a developmental lab! According to an Equity Casting Notice, the Disney production will have music by Tom Kitt and Brian Yorkey, who are both currently represented on Broadway by If/Then, and a book by Bridget Carpenter. Christopher Ashley will direct. The 1976 movie starred Barbara Harris and Jodie Foster, while the 2003 incarnation of the comedy was headlined by Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan. Next to Normal Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize-winning team Kitt and Yorkey are also working on a Magic Mike musical and an adaptation of The Visitor, while Kitt is additionally attached to a stage version of White House comedy Dave. Zachary Quinto Eyeing Edward Snowden Movie
Broadway alum Zachary Quinto may play Glenn Greenwald in Oliver Stone’s untitled Edward Snowden film. Greenwald was the journalist who the NSA contractor leaked classified documents to. The Wrap reports that Joseph Gordon-Levitt (AKA the man who should be on the Great White Way), will star as Snowden with Shailene Woodley as his longtime girlfriend Lindsay Mills; Tom Wilkinson and Melissa Leo are also in talks to join the project.
Michael Flately Set for Cameo in West End
Irish dance legend Michael Flately has set the dates for his final performances in the U.K. and Ireland. In a statement he said: “After years of punishment, my body just can’t take any more!” Flately will make a special appearance from March 13 through March 24 during the West End run of Lord Of The Dance: Dangerous Games, before he goes on a spring and summer U.K. tour, which will end on July 4 at Wembley Arena. As previously reported, James Keegan will be performing the lead role of Lord of the Dance at London's Dominion Theatre; the production will play March 9 through September 5.
Susan Smith Blackburn Finalists Named
The oldest and largest prize awarded to women playwrights, the Susan Smith Blackburn Prize, has announced its 2014-15 finalists. The winner will be named at a ceremony in the Big Apple on March 2 and awarded a cash prize of $25,000, with all finalists receiving $5,000. Chosen from over 150 nominated plays, the finalists are Lisa D'Amour (Airline Highway), Alice Birch (Revolt. She said. Revolt again), Alecky Blythe (Little Revolution), Clare Barron (You Got Older), Clara Brennan (Spine), Katherine Chandler (Parallel Lines), Frances Ya-Chu Cowhig (The World of Extreme Happiness), Lindsey Ferrentino (Ugly Lies the Bone), Zodwa Nyoni (Boi Boi Is Dead), Heidi Schreck (Grand Concourse), Ruby Rae Spiegel (Dry Land) and Tena Štivičić (3 Winters).
