Time to Dig Deep! Venue Set for Bombshell Concert; Christian Borle & More Smash Vets on Board

Bombshell is heading to the Great White Way for one-night-only, and now we know where! The previously announced June 8 benefit concert will bring to life the fictional Smash musical at the Minskoff Theatre, home of Broadway’s The Lion King. Tickets, proceeds of which will benefit the Actors Fund, will go on sale on April 14 to the general public.

As previously reported, on-screen rivals Katharine McPhee and Megan Hilty will reunite for the event. Also expected to join are fellow co-stars from the NBC drama Christian Borle, Will Chase and Debra Messing, as well as a handful of Broadway favorites.

Bombshell follows the life of Marilyn Monroe, from her earlier days as Norma Jeane Mortenson to her untimely death at the age of 36. The fight for title role fueled the rivalry between New York newcomer Karen Cartwright and Broadway vet Ivy Lynn, played by McPhee and Hilty, respectively. The score of the fictional musical was penned by real-life collaborators Scott Wittman and Marc Shaiman. Wittman will co-direct the concert with choreographer Joshua Bergasse.

And though Bombshell will finally get its chance to shine on the Great White Way this summer, don’t expect the show (or Hitlist) to become a Broadway mainstay. “There’s been no plan to create a show out of this,” Craig Zadan, who executive produced the first season of Smash and will produce the concert with Neil Meron, told The New York Times. “There’s a good chance everyone will have a good time, it will be an exciting night, and nothing will happen.” Hey, we can dream, Zadan. She’ll do all she can for millions who look from afar, right?

The cast and creative team will be donating their time and talents for the entertainment charity but to help underwrite the costs of the production and to assure that 100% of the proceeds will go to help people in performing arts and entertainment who are in need, crisis or transition, the show will be funded by a Kickstarter campaign. Those that donate will have insider access to the event.
