John Turturro will take on the title role in New York City Center Encores!’ concert production of Zorba!. Joining him are Tony nominees Marin Mazzie as The Leader, Santino Fontana as Nico and Zoë Wanamaker as Hortense, as well as Adam Chanler-Berat as Mimiko. Performances will run from May 6 through May 10. Walter Bobbie will direct.
Turturro appeared on Broadway in Relatively Speaking and Live (x) 3; his additional credits include Danny and the Deep Blue Sea, Waiting for Godot, and The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui. He took home an Emmy for his guest performance in Monk. Mazzie earned Tony nominations for her performances in Kiss Me, Kate, Ragtime and Passion. She last appeared on Broadway in Bullets Over Broadway. Fontana, who starred in Act One on the Great White Way last year, has also appeared on Broadway in Cinderella ,The Importance of Being Earnest and Brighton Beach Memoirs. Wanamaker has earned Tony nods for Awake and Sing!, Electra, Loot and Piaf. Chanler has appeared in Peter and the Starcatcher and Next to Normal on Broadway and The Fortress of Solitude and Rent off-Broadway.
The show features music by John Kander, lyrics by Fred Ebb and a book by Joseph Stein and follows a larger-than-life Greek jack-of-all-trades and his friendship with a young American student. The musical first premiered on Broadway in 1968 and features the songs “Life Is” and “Only Love.”
