This news is getting us going—it would seem that the upcoming Magic Mike XXL, the sequel to 2012's pelvic-thrusting movie Magic Mike, isn't all we have to look forward to! Channing Tatum recently told EW that the stage adaptation is "still in the works."
"We’re getting it going," said Tatum. "Oddly enough, the second one lends itself more to the musical. I think our original idea was to do a prequel, like how Mike got in.”
Magic Mike is the story of a veteran stripper who takes a newbie male dancer under his wing and coaches him about the lifestyle inside and outside the club. Based on Tatum’s real-life experience as a Florida stripper, the film starred Tatum, Matt Bomer, Alex Pettyfer, Matthew McConaughey and Joe Manganiello.
As previously reported, Next to Normal and If/Then Tony and Pulitzer Prize-winning songwriting team Tom Kitt and Brian Yorkey will write the score, and Spider Man, Turn Off the Dark and American Psycho librettist Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa will take on the book. No word yet on a production timeline, a theater or which handsome stage hunks will bare it all.
The musical will be produced by Tatum, the film’s director Steven Soderbergh, the screenwriter Reid Carolin, Gregory Jacobs and Nick Wechsler.
