Rita Wilson, who as previously reported temporarily departed Broadway's Fish in the Dark, has revealed that she was recently diagnosed with breast cancer. The actress, 58, told PEOPLE that last week, with her husband Tom Hanks by her side, "I underwent a bilateral mastectomy and reconstruction for breast cancer after a diagnosis of invasive lobular carcinoma."
"I am recovering and most importantly, expected to make a full recovery," said Wilson. "Why? Because I caught this early, have excellent doctors and because I got a second opinion...I hope this will encourage others to get a second opinion and to trust their instincts if something doesn't 'feel' right."
We at Broadway.com wish Wilson all the best and a swift and speedy recovery.
Glenne Headly continues in the role of Brenda in Fish in the Dark in Wilson's absence. A spokesperson for Larry David's comedy said in a statement: "Everyone at Fish in the Dark wishes Rita a speedy and healthy recovery, and looks forward to having her back on stage at the Cort on May 5."
