Something tells us this is more than “Beginner’s Luck.” In the week preceding the Tony Award nominations, An American in Paris leapt to the top five grossing shows, making $1,235,247 (the highest of its run so far). It joined perennial favorites/usual suspects The Lion King, Wicked, Aladdin and The Book of Mormon. While we expect the s’wonderful tuner to receive a nod on April 28, three new musicals whose numbers are not as high could also benefit from hearing their named called: The Visit, It Shoulda Been You and Doctor Zhivago. Meanwhile, John Cameron Mitchell celebrated his forthcoming Tony Honor early by playing the strongest week of his run in Hedwig and the Angry Inch. For his final seven performances, the show’s co-creator brought in $702,944. Darren Criss will don the wig and makeup beginning April 29.
