Rita Wilson recently took a hiatus from Larry David’s Fish in the Dark to undergo treatment for breast cancer. She returned to the show—on schedule—on May 5. “I had adrenaline coursing through me like never before,” she told The New York Times. “In a way, it was like a second opening night.”
The actress is normally very private and doesn’t “feel it necessary to let the world know what I’m thinking, where I’m eating.” However her cancer was discovered after she asked for a second opinion, so she revealed the health news in a bid to help others. “It’s so easy to say, ‘I’m just being paranoid,’ but you should trust your gut.” Her hubby Tom Hanks has been a huge support: “I was so amazed, so blown away by the care my husband gave me.”
The Fish in the Dark company, which includes David, Rosie Perez, Jayne Houdyshell, Jerry Adler, Jonny Orsini and more, kept in close touch while Glenne Headly stepped into Wilson’s role of Brenda. One member sent funny “nightly reports” about how the performance had gone. And as for David? When Wilson told him the news about the cancer, “he practically went white. I told him, ‘Larry, I’m going to be absolutely fine.’”
We at Broadway.com wish Wilson all the best and are so pleased that she is on the road to recovery.
