Time to grab your Swedish candy and drop those panties, because here comes another Broadway.com Younger recap! This week, Liza has us thinking back on some of our favorite TV series of past and present. Because who wouldn’t want to see two-time Tony winner Sutton Foster belt her way onto The Slap? In the meantime, here’s what she’s up to on Younger: Episode 8.
EPISODE 8: Sk8
The Affair, Starring Sutton Foster
It’s the day of the PEN Awards, and Empirical Press is ready to show off honoree Anton Bjornberg. You know, their latest acquisition and Kelsey’s man-on-the-side. We’ve never been fans of their tryst, primarily because nothing good comes out of drunk texting a married man or making out with him in a Swedish candy store. Not that we’re speaking from experience. When Liza learns that Bjornberg’s wife Annika is flying in to surprise him, she immediately warns Kelsey, who, despite being in a relationship of her own, does not foresee the collateral damage.
The Slap, Starring Sutton Foster
After landing, Bjornberg’s wife insists on taking Liza out for lunch. The meal escalates to an assault as Annika accuses Liza of sleeping with her husband: a conclusion she reaches after reading her husband’s manuscript, which mentions a doe-eyed assistant with “a vagina as soft as a walrus’ fold.” Is this a common Swedish idiom? Do people compare their Fridas to walruses often? Or is Bjornberg even more a literary pioneer than Empirical gives him credit for? We really don’t know.
The West Wing, Starring Sutton Foster
C.J. Cregg may be the queen of the walk-and-talk, but have you seen Trout’s business strut? Diana still has the hots for Charles (“straight, handsome, intellectual and available…it’s like finding a snow leopard in your backyard”) but has trouble empathizing with the new divorcee. Later, at the PEN Awards, she tries to relate his experience to her own divorce (which, like her relationship with Philip Roth, may or may not exist), but lacks the doe-eyed Liza’s tenderness.
The Walking Dead, Starring Sutton Foster
At the last minute, Diana volunteers Liza to babysit Charles’ daughters. Much to Charles’ delight, Liza quickly wins over the kids by talking about a girl she used to babysit named Caitlin (spoiler: Caitlin is her daughter who doesn’t exist in Liza’s alternate Younger-verse). As Liza’s office superiors wine and dine at the gala (and Bjornberg literally slices his hand open to win over Kelsey), Liza has the time of her life revising an earlier age of motherhood.
Rocket Power, Starring Sutton Foster
And then we get to Josh: the hot, doorless tattoo artist. This episode underlines the unspoken age gap between him and Liza hard, but more importantly, Liza finally starts to question a relationship with someone who doesn’t put “getting a bedroom door” at the top of his to-do list. Because you know who does have a door? Charles. Liza discusses her Punky Brewster era as one long gone, but Josh revives it with a skateboard. There's nothing wrong with a fun-loving attitude and nostalgic appreciation, but will they be as compatible once the jig is up?
Diana's Statement Jewelry of the Week!
Miriam Shor gave us a quick scare last week by recycling a statement piece in one scene, and she kept us on our toes once again by not wearing a necklace at all in her first scene. After approximately six minutes of high-pitched screaming at the screen, we were finally treated to this look from Diana’s Dance of the Vampires collection. Like that ill-fated musical, the necklace is dark, heavy and costs approximately $12 million.
