Here's a quick roundup of stories you may have missed today.
Sutton Steps in for Audra
There’s a bit of a switcheroo going on with the Boston Pops in Massachusetts. Younger star and two-time Tony winner Sutton Foster will step in for six-time Tony winner Audra McDonald on both the Presidents at Pops program on June 3 and as a featured guest on the Boston Pops program on June 2. McDonald had to “cancel due to an unforeseen scheduling conflict.” We'd always give anything to see either actress tread the boards!
Vegas Stage Tribute to Luhrmann Movies
One step closer, we can but hope, to a full stage adaptation of Moulin Rouge! A musical extravaganza of Baz Luhrmann's hit movies is heading to Las Vegas after a run in L.A. The Las Vegas Sun reports that Cirque du Soleil Theatrical is involved in For The Record: BAZ, which will feature moments from Romeo + Juliet, The Great Gatsby and, yes, Moulin Rouge. The show will begin performances on June 19 and officially open on June 26 at Mandalay Bay.
Kate Shindle Named New Equity President
Broadway alum Kate Shindle has been named the new President of the Actors' Equity Association (“Equity”), the U.S. labor union that represents more than 50,000 professional actors and stage managers. She replaced Nick Wyman in the position following the 2015 national council election. Also elected to three-year terms were Paige Price (First Vice President), Rebecca Kim Jordan (Second Vice President), Ira Mont (Third Vice President) and Sandra Karas (Secretary/Treasurer). Equity’s national council is the policy-making and governing body of the union, comprised of eight officers and 75 councilors who reside within Equity's three geographic regions.
David Hyde Pierce & Debra Monk Will Reunite on Stage
David Hyde Pierce, currently represented on Broadway with his direction of It Shoulda Been You, will star opposite Tony winner Debra Monk in Love Letters. The one-night-only staging will take place at George Street Playhouse’s New Brunswick stage on June 3, under the direction of David Saint. The benefit event is a reunion for the pair—they starred opposite each other on Broadway in 2007’s Curtains, which garnered Pierce a Tony.
