Could Playboy bunnies soon be heading to the Great White Way?! A musical based on the life of Hugh Hefner is in development. According to a casting notice, Hef will be workshopped this August, with industry performances taking place August 28 through August 30.
Directed and choreographed by Bethany Christine Elkin, the show will feature music and lyrics by Justin S. Fischer and book by Elkin and Jaime Donegan.
Elkin told Broadway.com: “the show is set in Chicago, in the 1950s to 1970s...It focuses on the creation of Playboy and also the life of Hugh Hefner and his secretary Bobbie Arnstein.”
The first issue of the infamous magazine was published in December 1953, with Marilyn Monroe on the cover. Arnstein took her own life in 1975; the FBI had been pressuring her to finger Hefner for drug offenses, an allegation that was never proved.
No word yet on casting, but we’re obviously already dreaming of how various of our Broadway faves would look donning a silk dressing gown.
