A Tony Awards celebration isn’t complete without themed eats, and we know just the guy to add pizzazz to your pastries. Broadway.com is teaming up with David Burke Group’s executive pastry chef and theater enthusiast Zac Young, who is sharing four decadent confections inspired by Tony-nominated productions. While cooking up a storm at Burke's midtown hotspot fabrick, Young discussed his ride from show tunes to sweets, with stops at Radio City and the Cooking Channel along the way. Check out the dazzling desserts below, print the recipes and get cooking!
An American Macaron in Paris
Macarons with peanut butter & jelly filling
“I’m so excited that dance shows are back, and I wanted to do something cheeky with An American in Paris. I took a classic French pasty and did classic American flavors in it with the peanut butter and jelly. Literally American in Paris.” GET THE RECIPE
Curious Blintz-idents
Mini blintzes with blueberry and mascarpone fillings
"Curious Incident, whoa. I had never experienced anything like that. I can’t even talk about it without bursting into tears. I was particularly moved by the dynamic between Christopher and his father. My father loves blintzes, and is quite good at making them—from the package. So blintzes it is!" GET THE RECIPE
I Can Cook-ie Too
Chocolate "Chip" cookies with sea salt
“My college buddy Alysha Umphress nails it nightly in On the Town with her soulful and brassy ‘I Can Cook Too.’ The chocolate chip cookie is a classic American treat, and the sea salt adds a modern—and nautical—twist. Also, ‘I Can Cook Too’ is my anthem. If I ever do a cabaret show at 54 Below, it will be called that.” GET THE RECIPE
Essie's Love Dreams
Meringues with white chocolate, coconut & almonds
“I wanted to take Annaleigh Ashford’s over-the-top performance in You Can't Take It With You and do something ridiculous. ‘Love Dreams’ were taken directly from the script and dressed up to match her whimsical tutu. It’s what I imagine they serve in The Nutcracker when they go to the Land of Sweets.” GET THE RECIPE
About Zac Young
Prior to culinary school, Young trained at Boston Conservatory and worked in the wig department at Radio City Music Hall. It was there that he picked up a cookie-baking habit, which led to his sweet career change. “Pastry was perfect,” he says, “because I was really good at science and had the flair for the dramatic.” Young loves Broadway, and Broadway truly loves him back. He created a donut tower—an alternative to a wedding cake—for Audra McDonald and Will Swenson, and his appearances on Top Chef: Just Desserts and Unique Sweets have made him a familiar face. His friendship with Keala Settle blossomed when she recognized him in an elevator: “I didn’t know if I should say something, but she turns around and goes, ‘We need to talk because I’m obsessed with you.'” Belting and baking: they go hand in hand.
