No character understands the importance of power statement jewelry like Younger’s Diana Trout. Every week in our recaps, we’ve drooled over the extravagant pieces that Miriam Shor has donned as Liza Miller’s (Sutton Foster) boss in the TV Land comedy. “It’s the opposite of what they say: ‘Before you walk out the door, take one thing off,’” Shor told Broadway.com. “Diana would say, ‘How many more things can I put on and scare the shit out of people?” As we gear up for the season finale on June 9, the Younger star walks us through some of Diana’s most iconic looks so far, with pieces ranging from Flavor of Love to “Origin of Love.”
The Clear Favorite
The Golden Donuts, Episode 3
"We ended up calling it 'The Flavor Flav.' Flavor Flav is my fave. Once I wore that, we were like, 'There’s nothing I can’t wear! We’ve broken the hymen of the necklace wearing!' Interestingly, it was also the lightest. You’re going to think I’m crazy, but let me tell you something about those golden donuts. Those were made out of wood and spray-painted. It always verges on something that my five-year-old might have made out of macaroni in kindergarten, but instead, Lanvin made it."
The Heaviest
The Dance of the Vampires collection, Episode 8
"Sutton [Foster] puts it on me, and you see my body literally sink two inches because of the weight. It’s like a breastplate before battle. [Diana]’s a very smart woman, but she has some insecurities. She thinks this will help Charles find her attractive. [Laughs.] And Charles is just like, 'I would love to look at your face while we’re talking, but you’re wearing a six-foot-by-four-foot necklace.'"
The Most Miriam
The Ouroboros, Episode 5
"That’s the one I would actually wear. I don’t even wear a wedding ring. That’s how little jewelry I wear in my actual life, which is what’s so fantastic and hilarious about getting to play a character whose jewelry helps define her work persona. You could actually wear it around and no one would throw their neck out doing a double take. Mind you, I was also wearing a ginormous white cape in that scene, so it’s not like I was going for subtlety."
The One Yitzhak Would Love
The Ring of Keys, Episode 4
"It’s sort of rock-and-roll; it’s dangerous; there’s a lot going on. That’s the one that looks like it has all the pieces from Clue on it. I think the lead pipe and the candlestick are on there! Actually, to me, it looks like someone accidentally wore their chastity belt around their neck. Who wears that? I would love to have lunch with that person."
The Piece That Goes With Everything
The "Origin of Love" necklace, Episode 6
"It’s one of my favorites. First of all, it’s incredibly versatile, because we wore it with so many outfits. To me, it looks like the amulet from Raiders of the Lost Ark. And then it just kept popping its little head up, and we were just like, 'Well, why not?' The Flava Flav is not as versatile. If you’re going to recycle that one, you have to wait six or seven years.”
The Complete Look (Earrings Included)
The Emerald City collection, Episode 10
"I was like, 'Maybe no one’s going to notice the necklace, so let me just put on these ginormous, shockingly blue earings.' Because we don’t want to blend. We literally put that necklace on and went, 'It’s not enough!' [Laughs.] It’s like when people start getting plastic surgery, can’t stop and end up looking like the cat woman. She doesn’t want to disappear—as if there’s any chance of that happening."
