Here's a quick roundup of stories from the Tony winners in the press room that you may have missed at the 69th Annual Tony Awards tonight.
JCM Says Hedwig is Heading to London
From East Germany to New York to London...Special Tony Award winner John Cameron Mitchell revealed to Broadway.com that the Tony-winning Hedwig and the Angry Inch is “definitely coming to the West End.” And who will play our favorite internationally ignored song stylist? They are “trying to get the right person.” Cryptically he revealed that the “person isn’t a Brit…but could very well be.” All we can say is, the U.K. is so ready for you to bring it home, Sugar Daddy!
Helen Mirren Has Her Eye on the EGOT!
Dame Helen Mirren was the first big celeb of the night to stop by the press room. With her Tony win for The Audience, she is now one Grammy short of becoming a member of the exclusive EGOT club. “I really want a Grammy!" she (jokingly?!) admitted. “I have to do an audiobook of some sort.” She doesn’t think she’ll play the Queen again—“I’m sure Her Majesty is sick to the teeth with me.” After saying she loved the Big Apple for its naked cowboys (really) she left clutching a vodka gimlet. There is nothing like a Dame!
Fun Home's Future
The world is Tony-winning Best Musical Fun Home 's oyster! Director Sam Gold told Broadway.com that: “I can’t confirm or deny Fun Home is coming to London.” The producers, however, later said that there had been "several sorts of conversations" about the transfer and it was now "probably looking good!" That's not all...They hope to bring the musical to "any country any language."
Curious on the Big Screen?
Could the Tony and Olivier-winning The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time be adapted for the big screen? The play’s Tony-winning director Marianne Elliott revealed that “Warner Brothers have the rights so it’s up to them.” However, the show's playwright, Simon Stephens, told Broadway.com that it won't be him penning the screenplay. He "loves" plays and theater so that's what he'll remain focussed on...and that's what we love to hear!
PS Non-Twitter user Something Rotten’s Christian Borle revealed “I troll [Laura] Benanti on Twitter” (we all do!), The King and I's Ruthie Ann Miles’ advice to her teenage self is: “don’t be a dentist," and our favorite quote of the night came from Curious' Alex Sharp: "I’ve won it for my character and for people like Christopher and the people who he represents.”
