One of the best parts of the Tony Awards (aside from the moving speeches and gorgeous red carpet looks) is seeing stage stars perform selections from our favorite Broadway musicals live on national TV. This year’s ceremony was chock full of great performances, including numbers from The King and I, On the Town, Gigi, An American in Paris, Finding Neverland and tons more. We asked you to vote for your favorites—and some of the results are a surprise!
1. Fun Home, “Ring of Keys”—35%
In a sea of medleys and flashy dance numbers, Fun Home opted for a more subtle and moving choice. 11-year-old Tony nominee Sydney Lucas commanded the stage as she sang her moving anthem “Ring of Keys,” the song we’ve had stuck in our heads all spring. Although Lucas didn’t end up taking home her first Tony Award, Fun Home won Best Musical, the biggest award of the night.
2. Something Rotten!, “A Musical”—17%
In lieu of a traditional opening number, co-hosts Kristin Chenoweth and Alan Cumming passed the baton to Brian d’Arcy James, Brad Oscar and the cast of Something Rotten!, who started off the ceremony with an all-singing, all-dancing spoof of Broadway musicals. Did you find all of the references to Les Miz, A Chorus Line, Annie and more? Let’s watch it again!
3. It Shoulda Been You, “Jenny’s Blues”—13%
Here comes the surprise—in an evening chock full of performances from Tony-nominated musicals, 13% of fans voted “Jenny’s Blues” from It Shoulda Been You, a show that got zero nominations, the best number of the evening. Headliner Lisa Howard belted her heart out and brought the house down. Bravo!
