Ayad Akhtar is adapting his Pulitzer Prize-winning play Disgraced for HBO. According to the Chicago Tribune, the playwright has been tapped to pen two scripts for the network—the other is a series about the international financial world. The Tony nominated Disgraced recently ran on Broadway at the Lyceum Theatre.
Disgraced follows Amir Kapoor, a successful Pakistani-American lawyer who is rapidly moving up the corporate ladder while distancing himself from his cultural roots. When Amir and his wife, Emily, a white artist influenced by Islamic paintings, host a dinner party, what starts out as a friendly conversation escalates into something far more damaging. Directed by Kimberly Senior, the Great White Way incarnation starred Hari Dhillon, Gretchen Mol and Josh Radnor.
Disgraced previously had a critically acclaimed off-Broadway run at Lincoln Center’s Claire Tow Theatre in 2012. A U.S. tour is planned to 30 theaters over the next two years.
