John Patrick Shanley’s Prodigal Son will make its world premiere at Manhattan Theatre Club. The new play written and directed by the Tony, Pulitzer Prize and Oscar winner will begin performances on January 19, 2016. The off-Broadway production will officially open on February 9 at New York City Center—Stage I.
Prodigal Son is a portrait of a young man on the verge of salvation or destruction. A 17-year-old boy from The Bronx finds himself suddenly in a private school in New Hampshire. He's violent, gifted, alienated, on fire with a ferocious loneliness. Two faculty members wrestle with the dilemma: Is the kid a star or a disaster?
Shanley received both the Tony and the Pulitzer for Doubt; he was last represented on Broadway by the Tony nominated Outside Mullingar. He won an Oscar for his script of Moonstruck.
