Guys and Dolls will be gambling again in London’s West End! The Chichester Festival Theatre production of the classic tuner is set to transfer to the Savoy Theatre for a 13-week limited engagement from December 10. Directed by Gordon Greenberg, with choreography by Carlos Acosta, Olivier winner Sophie Thompson and Broadway alum Jamie Parker have been tapped to reprise their roles. Opening night is scheduled for January 6, 2016.
Thompson received an Olivier for her performance in Into the Woods. Her additional theater credits include The Physicists, She Stoops To Conquer, Clybourne Park, Measure for Measure and Company. On screen credits include Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows, Eat, Pray, Love, Nicholas Nickleby, Gosford Park, Emma, Four Weddings and a Funeral, Lightfields, Watson and Oliver, Poirot, Doc Martin and EastEnders.
Parker appeared on Broadway in The History Boys and is currently starring as Mike Connor in High Society at The Old Vic. Other stage credits include Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead, Proof, Henry V, Henry IV Part I and Henry IV Part 2 and As You Like Like It. On screen he has been seen in Le Weekend, Valkyrie, The History Boys, Parade's End, Silk, The Hour, Silent Witness and Wire in the Blood.
Based on a story and characters by Damon Runyon, with music and lyrics by Frank Loesser and a book by Jo Swerling and Abe Burrows, the show follows a desperate Nathan Detroit in prohibition-era New York. He needs money for an illegal dice game, and he needs it fast. Not to mention a 14-year engagement with nightclub singer Miss Adelaide (Thompson), whose patience is finally running out. Enter notorious gambler Sky Masterson (Parker), a guy who can never turn down a bet, and straight-laced missionary Sarah Brown, a doll with a heart of ice. Nathan’s wager is that Sky has to romance Sarah by taking her to Havana for dinner and in return he’ll provide a dozen "sinners" for Sarah’s mission. Surely this is one bet Nathan absolutely can't lose?
The production will feature design by Peter McKintosh, additional choreography by Andrew Wright, lighting by Tim Mitchell, sound by Paul Groothuis, musical supervision/direction/dance arrangements by Gareth Valentine and orchestrations by Larry Blank.
The last production of Guys and Dolls in the West End began in summer of 2005 and closed in spring 2007. During the run, helmed by Michael Grandage, the starry cast included Ewan McGregor, Patrick Swayze, Jane Krakowski, Douglas Hodge and Don Johnson. The most recent Broadway revival opened on March 1, 2009, directed by Des McAnuff and starring Oliver Platt, Lauren Graham, Craig Bierko and Kate Jennings Grant.
