Here's a quick roundup of stories you may have missed today and over the weekend.
Casting Set for Benedict Cumberbatch-Led Hamlet
We now know all the lucky souls who will be joining Benedict Cumberbatch on stage in the hotly anticipated Hamlet. Rudi Dharmalingam will play Guildenstern, with Matthew Steer as Rosencrantz; rounding out the company will be Barry Aird, Eddie Arnold, Nigel Carrington, Ruairi Conaghan, Colin Haigh, Paul Ham, Diveen Henry, Karl Johnson, Amaka Okafor, Dan Parr, Jan Shepherd, Morag Siller, Sergo Vares and Dwane Walcott. As previously reported, Ciarán Hinds takes on the role of Claudius, with Tony winner Jim Norton as Polonius, Anastasia Hille as Gertrude, Siân Brooke as Ophelia, Kobna Holdbrook-Smith as Laertes and Leo Bill as Horatio. Directed by Lyndsey Turner, rehearsals began today and previews start on August 5 at London's Barbican Theatre. And speaking of Cumberbatch...
Arise 'Sir' Kevin Spacey!
Oscar nominee Cumberbatch was among those named in the Queen’s Birthday Honours as well as just becoming a Dad! He collected a CBE (Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire), as did fellow stage and screen star Chiwetel Ejiofor. Tony and Oscar winner Kevin Spacey received an honorary Knighthood, although it doesn't mean you can call him Sir Kevin—as he’s American he just gets some sort of jewelry to wear. Other notable names to garner nods included Tony and Oscar winner Eddie Redmayne and West End fave Michael Ball, who both picked up OBEs (Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire).
School of Rock Will Play London
Andrew Lloyd Webber's upcoming School of Rock—The Musical marks the first time he has opened a show on Broadway before London since Jesus Christ Superstar in 1971. However, that doesn't mean that a West End production isn't in the works. "We’ll play London after New York," the composer told The New York Post. We have a feeling that this won't be the only other city wanting to be in the band!
Tracy Letts & Danny Burstein Board Indignation
A trio of Broadway vets have been tapped for the big screen adaptation of Philip Roth’s best-selling novel Indignation, directed by James Schamus. Tony winner Tracy Letts, upcoming Fiddler headliner Danny Burstein and his Cabaret partner-in-crime Linda Emond, will all star in the film, Deadline reports. Production is scheduled to begin in and around the Big Apple this week for the 1951-set story about an idealistic son of a kosher butcher, played by Logan Lerman.
Justin Long's Double Duty at WTF
More big names have joined the already starry lineup for this year’s Williamstown Theatre Festival’s Main Stage and Nikos Stage productions and Justin Long will now perform in two shows. On the Main Stage: completing the cast of Off the Main Road are Daniel Sharman (Teen Wolf) and Jeremy Davidson (Army Wives); Kristolyn Lloyd (Heathers: The Musical) rounds out the cast of Paradise Blue; and Glynn Turman (The Wire) finalizes the company of A Moon for the Misbegotten. On the Nikos Stage, Christina Sajous (Holler If Ya Hear Me), Clara Young (How the Grinch Stole Christmas) and Jessica Phillips (Leap of Faith) will all join new musical Unknown Soldier, and last but by no means least, An Intervention will feature Betty Gilpin (Nurse Jackie) and Long (Ed) as part of a rotating cast. It will be double duty for Long, as he's also appearing in the production of Legacy at the Nikos. Time for a Broadway.com field trip!
