From ballet boy to Spider-Man! Tom Holland, who played the titular role in the West End’s Billy Elliot the Musical, is set to put all that training to good use as the new Spidey. According to Variety, the 19-year-old will be the third actor to play the superhero in a big budget movie, following Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield. The new Spider-Man film, now part of the Marvel universe, will hit theaters on July 28, 2017, although Holland is first expected to appear as the character in Marvel's Captain America: Civil War before then.
Holland made his West End debut as Michael in Billy Elliot in June 2008, before beginning performances in the title role that September. He has also appeared in the movie The Impossible, starring opposite Naomi Watts and Ewan McGregor. Additional screen credits include the TV adaptation of Wolf Hall; he will soon be seen in the movie In the Heart of the Sea, directed by Ron Howard, alongside Chris Hemsworth.
