Here's a quick roundup of stories you may have missed today.
Rock Out With Darren Criss & Rebecca Naomi Jones
On June 28 we expect you to put on some make-up, turn up the eight track and get yourself to the New York City Pride parade! Hedwig and the Angry Inch stars Darren Criss and Rebecca Naomi Jones will headline this year’s Herrick-Martin Institute’s float and they need to hear your rendition of "The Origin of Love" as they glide by. The Broadway production has so far donated $500,000 to HMI, which creates a safe and supportive environment in which LGBTQ youth can reach their full potential. Criss is set to wig out in Hedwig at the Belasco Theatre through July 19; Taye Diggs will step into our favorite internationally ignored stylist’s heels on July 22.
Dick Van Patten Dead at 86
Stage and screen star Dick Van Patten died aged 86 on June 23, according to The New York Times. Perhaps best known for his starring role as the father on the 1970s series Eight Is Enough, Van Patten made his Broadway debut aged seven in Tapestry in Grey, going on to star in many other plays as a teenager. A long-time collaborator of Mel Brooks on screen, he was last seen on the Great White Way in 1974’s Thieves. Van Patten is survived by his wife of 62 years, Pat; sons Nels, Jimmy and Vincent, sister Joyce Van Patten and niece Talia Balsam; and his half-brother, Tim Van Patten.
Perez Hilton Set for Full House! The Musical!
You got it, dude! Celebrity blogger Perez Hilton will headline the previously reported Full House! The Musical! off-Broadway. The show follows patriarch Danny (Hilton) after he loses his super power of solving problems with “sensible Dad Speeches.” Performances will begin September 7 at Theater 80.
Lorna Luft Ends U.K. Tour for Breast Cancer Treatment
Lorna Luft, currently headlining a U.K. tour of Judy—The Songbook of Judy Garland, has had to cancel a number of performances so she can undergo surgery for breast cancer. Luft, Garland’s daughter, was initially diagnosed with breast cancer in 2012 and finished her last treatment of chemotherapy in 2013. She had been clear for the last two years, but it has now returned. The production will play its final show in Brighton on July 11 and we here at Broadway.com wish her a speedy recovery.
Get Your Steven Pasquale Fix
Oh, how we wish we could be in Iowa next week. Jason Robert Brown will conduct selections from his Tony-winning The Bridges of Madison County score at the Des Moines Symphony’s 22nd annual free Yankee Doodle Pops concert on July 2. If like us you can’t make the event on the Iowa State Capitol’s West Terrace, here’s the former Broadway show's leading man Steven Pasquale singing “It All Fades Away.” That should tide you over until the musical goes on tour later this year. You're welcome.
