Guys, it’s Friday, and you know what that means—LGBT couples in all 50 states can get married! YEAH! Best Friday ever! It’s also time for a very rainbow edition of the Lessons of the Week, where we catch up on all of the weird and wacky stuff that happened on Broadway in the last seven days. Ready? Let’s do this!
Taye Diggs Loves Nail Polish
Until now, Taye Diggs has only shown us his manly side—you know, the side that wears shiny green jackets and puka shell necklaces. But now that he’s gearing up to play the title transgender rock goddess in Hedwig and the Angry Inch, he’s embracing his femininity with glitter, lipstick and nail polish, which he says he's totally into. Taye, we’re totally into you wearing nail polish, too. #callus #youalreadyfollowusontwitter
Angel Is the Queen of Pride
When we asked fans to name their favorite LGBTQ character in a Broadway musical, the clear favorite was gold-hearted drag diva Angel in Rent (who can now get married to Collins in any damn state she wants, we might add!). Congratulations, Angel, you’re the official Queen of Pride Week! We have your first challenge, should you choose to accept it, below.
The Genie Needs to Come Out Already
We invited a bunch of awesome out theater stars to a Pride pool party, and they revealed which characters from Broadway musicals totally need to come out of the closet already. Genie from Aladdin, Judge Pitkin from On the Town, J.M. Barrie from Finding Neverland, Max from The Sound of Music and Usnavi from In the Heights, we’re here if you need to talk.
Lena Hall Is a Glam Rock Psychic
Hedwig alum Lena Hall is so many things—a kick-ass belter, a Tony winner and a My Little Pony proponent, just to name a few. But she also, apparently, can predict the future. After comparing Michael Hall’s voice to David Bowie in October, her former co-star will star in Bowie’s musical Lazarus. Thanks, Lena! Now tell us what’s up with the Wicked movie.
Perez Hilton Has Three Daughters
What ever happened to predictability? The milkman, the paperboy and evening TV? We have no idea, but on an unrelated note, Perez Hilton is starring in Full House: The Musical Parody. Hey Ramin Karimloo, if you’re looking to pick up a third gig, we think you’d be the perfect Uncle Jesse. As long as you do this.
J-Hud’s Got a Purple Kisser
We’re not Lena Hall-level psychics, but something tells us Jennifer Hudson is going to be a great Shug Avery in The Color Purple. No, not just because she’s an Oscar winner and she killed it on American Idol—because she can color coordinate like a boss. When she chatted with Broadway.com about her new gig, she sported purple lipstick and nail polish. Taye Diggs, sounds like you and J-Hud need a Sephora date.
Sam Barks Says Oui to Amelie
Speaking of Broadway debuts we’ve been waiting our entire lives for, Les Miz movie star Samantha Barks has confirmed she’ll be starring in Amelie at the Berkley Repertory Theatre, and we have our fingers and toes crossed that the musical could head to the Great White Way next. (P.S. We knew this first and told you in April. We deserve peanut butter cups.)
Bombshell Needs a Book
After the sold-out concert production of Bombshell, plans are now in motion to bring it to Broadway. There are just a few teeny problems: It’s not technically a real musical, it has no book, and there’s really no discernable plot. So basically, Bombshell needs a great book writer and fast. Hey Lena Hall the All-Knowing, think you can help us figure this one out?
Rebecca Naomi Jones Was a Cherub
Hedwig and the Angry Inch star Rebecca Naomi Jones has the total opposite of a sordid past—she played an angel in a Metropolitan Opera production when she was a child and would take an elevator up to the rafters to sing sweet melodies from the heavens. We spent most of our time picking our noses and putting on living room productions of Hello, Dolly! when we were kids, but to each her own.
Kristin Chenoweth Is Super Freaky
This week, the On the Twentieth Century star tweeted, “I’m a lady in the street but a freak at the buffet.” This makes us like her even more, if that were even possible. Best of all, we’ve got something new to put on our bucket list: Go to the Sizzler with Kristin Chenoweth and eat all the pie.
