The Father, by Florian Zeller in a new translation by Tony and Oscar winner Christopher Hampton (Sunset Boulevard, Dangerous Liaisons), is heading to London’s West End. Starring Kenneth Cranham (An Inspector Calls) and Olivier nominee Claire Skinner (The Glass Menagerie), the production will play a limited engagement September 30 through November 21. Directed by James Macdonald, the show will officially open on October 5.
Now 80 years old, Andre was once a tap dancer. He lives with his daughter Anne and her husband Antoine. Or was he an engineer whose daughter Anne lives in London with her new lover, Pierre? The thing is, he is still wearing his pyjamas, and he can’t find his watch. He is starting to wonder if he’s losing control.
The West End engagement follows runs at the Ustinov Studio in Bath and the Tricycle Theatre in London. The company also includes Rebecca Charles with additional casting to be later; the production will feature design by Miriam Buether, lighting design by Guy Hoare and sound design by Christopher Shutt.
