We're wigging out! The Tony-winning Hedwig and the Angry Inch, starring Taye Diggs as our favorite internationally ignored song stylist, will shutter at Broadway's Belasco Theatre on September 13. At the time of closing, the musical revival will have played 22 previews and 506 regular performances.
Written by 2015 Tony honoree John Cameron Mitchell and Stephen Trask, Hedwig and the Angry Inch tells the story of a fictional rock ‘n’ roll band, fronted by Hedwig, a transgender woman from communist East Berlin. Between rock songs, Hedwig regales the audience with both humorous and painful stories about her life, including her botched sex change operation. Trask’s score features “Tear Me Down,” “Wig in a Box,” “Wicked Little Town,” "The Origin of Love," “Angry Inch” and more.
Directed by Michael Mayer, the production also stars Rebecca Naomi Jones as Yitzhak. Neil Patrick Harris won a 2014 Tony for his performance in the titular role. Since then, Hedwig has also been headlined by Andrew Rannells, Michael C. Hall, co-creator Mitchell and Darren Criss.
A national tour of Hedwig and the Angry Inch is scheduled to kick off in San Francisco on October 4, 2016, with productions also in the works for the West End and Australia.
