Tony-winning director Michael Mayer, currently represented on Broadway by Hedwig and the Angry Inch, has amassed a starry cast of stage and screen vets for a movie adaptation of Chekhov’s The Seagull. Deadline reports that two-time Tony winner Brian Dennehy, Tony nominees Elisabeth Moss and Mare Winningham, along with Broadway alums Annette Bening and Corey Stoll, will lead the cast.
Stephen Karam, whose play Sons of the Prophet was a finalist for the 2012 Pulitzer Prize, has penned the script. The Seagull, set during a turning point in Russian history, involves young Konstantin, who struggles to define himself as a writer. When his mother, the famous actress Arkadina and her lover Trigorin arrive to spend the summer at her family's country home, their appearance wreaks havoc on the rest of the family.
Saoirse Ronan will also star; rounding out the company will be Broadway alums Jon Tenney and Glen Fleshler, as well as Michael Zegen and Billy Howle.
Production is currently taking place in York. The Seagull was last seen on Broadway in 2008 with a cast including Kristin Scott Thomas, Mackenzie Crook, Peter Sarsgaard, Art Malik and Carey Mulligan.
