Tony winner Matthew Broderick has been tapped to join the already starry cast of A.R. Gurney's Sylvia as new dog owner Greg. The production will also star Tony winners Annaleigh Ashford and Julie White, as well as Robert Sella. Directed by Daniel Sullivan, performances are now scheduled to begin slightly later than first announced, on October 2 at the Cort Theatre. The production will officially open on October 27.
Broderick last appeared on Broadway in It’s Only a Play, opposite his The Producers co-star Nathan Lane, and won Tonys for his performances in How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying and Brighton Beach Memoirs. Broderick's also appeared on the Great White Way in Nice Work If You Can Get It, The Philanthropist, The Odd Couple (again, opposite Lane) and Biloxi Blues. He’s perhaps known most on screen for Ferris Bueller’s Day Off; his additional film credits include The Lion King and Godzilla.
In Sylvia, the world of a middle-aged New York couple is turned topsy-turvy when the husband (Broderick) brings home an exceptionally engaging canine (Ashford) running loose in Central Park. The original 1995 off-Broadway production starred Broderick’s wife, Sarah Jessica Parker. This production marks the show’s Broadway premiere.
The production will feature scenic design by David Rockwell, costume design by Ann Roth and lighting design by Japhy Weideman.
