Miley Cyrus signed off her gig as VMA host on August 30 with a surprise performance of "Dooo It!," accompanied by an impressive group of drag queens, trans performers and activists. But as it turns out, the pop superstar, who has been extremely vocal about subverting gender stereotypes in the past, could have explored the territory even further on Broadway—as genderqueer internationally ignored song stylist Hedwig.
According to Out.com, Cyrus was in talks to play the iconic transgender rock-star in Hedwig and the Angry Inch as a replacement in the Tony-winning revival. But that wrecking ball won’t swing all the way over to the Belasco Theatre after all, as the production is set to close on September 13 with current headliner Taye Diggs.
Cyrus wouldn’t have been the first actress to attempt the role: The Breakfast Club’s Ally Sheedy stepped in as a replacement in the original off-Broadway production at the Jane Street Theater, but abruptly ended her run after a few weeks.
Before dismissing the casting-that-never-was as a stunt, consider Cyrus’ stance on gender fluidity. “I’ve never thought, ‘I’m a girl, and so I can’t do this or I can do this,’” she said previously on Good Morning America. “I feel completely like I’m not tied to a gender or to an age. I feel like an infinite cosmic thing.” While she may not have the Broadway experience, she has a particular insight on the material.
A production spokesperson for Hedwig and the Angry Inch had no comment.
