Broadway Goes to Cuba
Broadway is heading to Cuba (can we come ?!)! Great White Way alums Justin Matthew Sargent (Rock of Ages), Dustin Brayley (Miss Saigon), Carrie Manolakos (Dracula), Jason Wooten (Hair), American Idol's Ashley Loren (Jekyll and Hyde), along with international singer Chloe Lowrey, will open the Havana International Theatre Festival in Cuba in Broadway Rox. Conceived by Jason Howland, Rob Evan, Rich Affannato and Thom Schilling, the live concert event celebrates the rock and pop hits of the Main Stem, including Wicked, Jersey Boys, Rent, Mamma Mia, Jesus Christ Superstar and more. Performances, courtesy of Nederlander Worldwide Entertainment, will take place on October 23, 24 and 25 at the Teatro Mella. We want to go. Seriously!
Julie Taymor Heads to Brooklyn
Tony winner Julie Taymor (The Lion King) will host Made in Brooklyn, an evening of music by Brooklyn composers including George Gershwin and her frequent collaborator Elliot Goldenthal. The event, on November 6 at National Sawdust, is set to kick off a concert series at the recently opened new performance space in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.
Jenna Russell & Sheila Hancock Set for Grey Gardens
Tony nominee Jenna Russell and stage and screen vet Sheila Hancock will headline the European premiere of Grey Gardens. The tuner, which played 307 performances on Broadway in 2006-7, tells the real-life rise and fall of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis’s aunt and cousin, Edith and Edie Bouvier Beale. Directed by Thom Southerland, with a book by Doug Wright, music by Scott Frankel and lyrics by Michael Korie, the production will play a limited six-week engagement at The Large at Southwark Playhouse in London from January 2, 2016. Opening night is scheduled for January 7.
