George Morfogen (Oz) and more have been enlisted for the previously reported production of Ingmar Bergman’s Nora at Cherry Lane Theatre this fall. Directed by Austin Pendleton, the adaptation of Henrik Ibsen’s classic drama A Doll’s House will make its English-language New York debut at the off-Broadway venue. The limited engagement is scheduled to run November 14 through December 12, with opening night set for November 22.
The cast will also include Jean Lichty (Bus Stop), Larry Bull (The Coast of Utopia), Andrea Cirie and Todd Gearhart. Bergman’s adaptation was last performed in New York—in Norwegian—at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in 1989.
The translation used in the new production of Nora is by Frederick J. Marker and Lise Lone-Marker and based on Ibsen’s tale of a conventional woman coming to terms with her life in a man’s world. Through the microcosm of Nora’s “doll house” marriage, both Bergman and Ibsen pose crucial questions about the role of gender in modern society.
Nora will feature set and lighting design by Harry Feiner, with costume design by Theresa Squire and sound design by Ryan Rumery.
