Tony and Emmy winner Leslie Uggams will no longer headline the New York premiere of Colman Domingo’s Dot at off-Broadway’s Vineyard Theatre. Marjorie Johnson, who played the title role in the world premiere at the Actors Theatre of Louisville earlier this year, will instead reprise her performance. Performances will begin on February 4, 2016. Opening night is set for February 23.
Uggams, a Tony winner for Hallelujah, Baby! and an Emmy winner for Fantasy, will instead film a recurring role on the Fox series Empire, according to the New York Times.
Johnson’s additional credits include The Little Foxes on Broadway and Hoodoo Love, M: The Mandela Saga, The House of Bernarda Alba off-Broadway.
Also added to the cast is Finnerty Steeves (Brighton Beach Memoirs). The two join the previously announced Sharon Washington, Stephen Conrad Moore, Libya V. Pugh, Colin Hanlon and Michael Rosen.
Dot follows Dotty, a matriarch suffering from dementia. Her three adult children gather for the holidays with more than exchanging presents on their mind and fight to balance care for their mother and for themselves. Tony winner Susan Stroman will direct the Vineyard Theatre production.
