Can’t help lovin’ this musical! Daniel Evans’ acclaimed revival of Show Boat will transfer from Sheffield to the West End this spring. The production is scheduled to begin previews on April 9 and officially open on April 25 at the New London Theatre, where War Horse will finish up its long-running engagement on March 12. Casting will be announced later.
Show Boat follows the lives of three generations of performers, stagehands and dock workers as their theater, the Cotton Blossom, floats along the Mississippi River. The musical was first performed on Broadway in 1927 and has been revived on the Great White Way and by opera companies numerous times since then. The tuner features such classic showtunes as "Can't Help Lovin' Dat Man," "Ol' Man River," "Make Believe" and “You Are Love.”
With music by Jerome Kern and book and lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II based on the novel Show Boat by Edna Ferber, the production will feature designs by Lez Brotherston, choreography by Alistair David, musical supervision and direction by David White, lighting by David Hersey, sound by Paul Groothuis and video design by Tim Reid.
