An interesting Broadway switcheroo is apparently on the cards. Alfie Boe, who will depart the Main Stem revival of Les Miz on February 28, is reportedly flying over to Finding Neverland. According to the New York Post, the Brit will take over for Tony Yazbeck as J.M. Barrie before returning to the U.K. to lead the planned London production of the Broadway.com Audience Choice Award-winning new musical. No word yet on when Yazbeck will depart the show; he only replaced Matthew Morrison as Barrie on January 26. Broadway.com has reached out to a production spokesperson for comment.
Boe made his Broadway debut as Rodolfo in Baz Luhrmann’s La Boheme, for which he and his co-stars received a special Tony Award in 2003 for their performances. He played the role of Valjean in the 25th Anniversary Concert at London’s O2 Arena in October, 2010 and went on to lead the original West End production of the show. His live opera appearances include The Pearl Fishers at the English National Opera and Romeo ET Juliette at the Royal Opera House. Boe was recently seen on screen in Mr. Selfridge.
Directed by Diane Paulus and featuring a score by Gary Barlow and Eliot Kennedy and a book by James Graham, Finding Neverland follows the story of J.M. Barrie and his relationship with the family of widow Sylvia Llewelyn Davies. Llewelyn Davies' children eventually became Barrie's inspiration to write Peter Pan.
The cast at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre also currently includes Kelsey Grammer as Charles Frohman (through March 26), Laura Michelle Kelly as Sylvia Llewelyn Davies, Sandy Duncan as Madame du Maurier and Teal Wicks as Mary Barrie.
