Don't be alarmed, ladies and gentlemen! Broadway.com has learned that an industry-only reading of the long-in-the-works production of King Kong took place on February 19. Directed by Eric Schaeffer, the workshop at Baryshnikov Arts Center starred Marc Kudisch, Robert Creighton and more.
As previously reported, Tony winners Jason Robert Brown and Marsha Norman have now boarded the project, and they were credited with the book and additional songs, respectively. Music is by the original composer of the tuner, Marius de Vries.
Along with Kudisch as Carl Denham and Robert Creighton as Benny, the cast included Euan Morton as Jack Driscoll, Lora Lee Gayer as Ann Darrow, Sam Foster as King Kong, Benny Elledge as Voice of Kong and Cole Edelstein as Young Jack.
Set against the backdrop of bustling New York City in the 1930s, the show tells the story of the infamous ape and his encounter with aspiring actress Ann Darrow, megalomaniac filmmaker Carl Denham, Natural History Museum head Jack Driscoll and the people of NYC.
No word yet on when King Kong will stomp on Broadway. Daniel Kramer was at the helm for the show's world premiere in Melbourne, Australia in June 2013.
