Does anyone have ice cream? We all deserve some after this week’s episode of Younger. Perhaps no one is more deserving than Liza, a.k.a. Sutton Foster. The forty-something millennial is put through the emotional gauntlet as she reveals a certain secret for the sake of her job, but also faces the consequences of keeping said secret elsewhere. Let’s breakdown the plight of Liza Miller.
SEASON 2, EPISODE 8: "Beyond Therapy"
Emoji Update
While drinking “the champagne of beers” (no thank you), Josh tells Liza that’s he’s going to be profiled in T Magazine, and while Liza’s thrilled, she admonishes him to be careful about talking about her with the fact check-happy New York Times. Liza and Kelsey pitch Millennial Print to Dr. Jane Wray (Camryn Manheim), who’s writing a guidebook for twentysomethings. At Jane’s office, Liza runs into Cheryl Sussman (Tony winner Martha Plimpton), who tried to blackmail Liza last season (it didn’t work out well). Inspired by Jane’s life advice, Kelsey breaks up with Thad. Liza stops by Josh’s photoshoot for his profile, but once again insists on not being mentioned. The next day, she cancels their lunch after receiving an urgent text from Cheryl. Liza meets up with her nemesis, who threatens to tell Dr. Wray about Liza’s secret. In a brilliant retaliation, Liza beats her to it, and Dr. Wray agrees to keep her secret and sign with Millennial Print, if she can use Liza as a case study. While celebrating the win, Kelsey and Lauren pull up Josh’s profile, and are furious (on Liza’s behalf) that she’s not mentioned, not realizing it was her call from the beginning. Josh, who is unwilling to be punished for her lie, breaks up with her outside the bar. As Liza rejoins her friends, potentially to rectify the situation with the truth, Thad proposes to Kelsey.
Biggest OMG Moment:
The final five seconds of this week’s episode are gut-wrenching. Liza’s forced to react to a breakup while simultaneously putting off the one thing that could reverse her situation and celebrating the engagement of the friend she’s lying to. That's a lot to handle, and Sutton's face captures it perfectly.
Millennial Glossary:
Periscope:(noun) An app used to livestream video content, in which viewers can interact and comment in real time. In the pitch meeting, Liza suggests using it to further promote Dr. Wray’s podcast. Clearly, Liza is a big fan of #LiveatFive—unlike some Tony-winning leading ladies!
Moment That Made Us Go:
When Liza thwarts Cheryl’s plan by beating her to the punch and telling Dr. Wray she’s not 26. It was an exciting scene—and the first time this season that Liza has revealed her situation. Seeing Liza be so savvy and own her truth is worthy of a happy dance.
Diana's Statement Jewelry Update!
Miriam Shor: drag king icon, knower of where we arrrre, human Newton’s cradle. This week, Diana sported a collection of spheres (we’re noticing a trend), and with one on each ear and two around her neck, we couldn’t help but wonder if they’d swing with the momentum and energy of Sir Isaac Newton’s balls. We never thought we'd bring up Sir Isaac Newton's balls in a Younger recap, but here we are.
