Here's a quick roundup of stories you may have missed today.
Hamilton Cast Album Goes Gold
What comes next in the wave of accolades for the Great White Way's gargantuan hit Hamilton? The original Broadway cast album has gone gold, because everyone wants to be in the room where it happens. This isn’t a huge surprise—back in November the record made it to number one on the Billboard Rap Chart, but it is obviously a significant milestone to celebrate all the same. Congratulations to creator and star Lin-Manuel Miranda, along with the entire company—see you at the Beacon Theatre on June 12?!
Christian Borle Will Join Bee
Original Main Stem cast members of The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee Christian Borle (Something Rotten!) and Jose Llana (The King and I) have boarded Broadway Bee. The spelling bee for adults will benefit Broadway Bound Kids, an NYC performing arts education organization, and feature actors from current hit musicals. Other Great White Way faves tapped for the evening include Drew Gehling (Waitress), Melvin Tunstall and Jessica Keenan Wynn (Beautiful), Karl Kenzler (Fiddler on the Roof), Joseph Medeiros (Matilda), Mary Page Nance (Finding Neverland) and Jonah Platt (Wicked). The first annual event is scheduled to take place on May 9 at The Cutting Room.
Levi & Hilty to Host Drama League Awards
Mark your calendars! She Loves Me’s Zachary Levi and Broadway bombshell Megan Hilty will host the 82nd Annual Drama League Awards on May 20 at the Marriott Marquis Times Square. The nominees for Outstanding Play, Outstanding Revival of a Play, Outstanding Musical, Outstanding Revival of a Musical, and the prestigious Distinguished Performance Award (which a performer can only win once in his or her lifetime) will be announced on April 20 at Sardi’s. Last year Chita Rivera, one of 47 nominees for the top honor, took home the big prize.
Donna Lynne Champlin Boards Matt Damon Film
Broadway alum Donna Lynne Champlin (Billy Elliot: The Musical) has landed a role in Alexander Payne’s film Downsizing, starring Matt Damon and Kristen Wiig. According to Deadline, there's no word on who the Crazy Ex-Girlfriend star will play in the movie, which follows a man going through a process that reduces him to a tiny fraction of his size. Champlin will next be seen on stage in Shakespeare in the Park's The Taming of the Shrew.
Cary Grant Tuner In Development
A Cary Grant musical is in the works. The show about the Hollywood legend is based on his ex-wife, two-time Oscar nominee Dyan Cannon’s bestseller, Dear Cary. “We have a book. We have some songs. The next step is the 29-hour table read,” Cannon told the New York Post. She plans to play herself in the project. We're intrigued...as Grant once said: "Everyone wants to be Cary Grant. Even I want to be Cary Grant."
