The writing was on the wall when the Show Boat revival announced it would be closing early at the New London Theatre. School of Rock, which is up for four 2016 Tony Awards including Best New Musical, will begin sticking it to the man at the venue on October 24. Opening night is scheduled for November 14. No word yet on casting.
Andrew Lloyd webber's hit tuner had initially been slated to begin performances at the London Palladium this fall, before postponing the production until the spring of 2017. A Cinderella pantomime, potentially headlined by Britney Spears, is now playing in the venue over the holiday season.
Directed by Laurence Connor, the show features music from the hit 2003 movie, as well as new music written by Lloyd Webber and lyricist Glenn Slater, with a book by 2016 Tony nominee Julian Fellowes. The film was penned by Mike White, directed by Richard Linklater and starred Jack Black as wannabe rock star Dewey Finn, who poses as a substitute teacher at a prestigious prep school. When he discovers his students’ musical talents, he enlists his fifth-graders to form a rock group and conquer the Battle of the Bands.
The Broadway production opened in December 2015 and currently stars 2016 Tony nominee Alex Brightman and Sierra Boggess. In addition to the upcoming London bow, a U.S. tour is in the works and aiming for a fall 2017 launch.
