They’re your Dreamgirls! Ibinabo Jack (The Color Purple) and Liisi LaFontaine (NBC’s The Winner Is) will join the previously reported Amber Riley in the first West End production of the classic musical. Directed and choreographed by Tony winner Casey Nicholaw, the production is scheduled to begin previews on November 19 and officially open on December 14 at the Savoy Theatre.
Joining Riley as Effie White, Jack as Lorrell Robinson and LaFontaine as Deena Jones, will be Nicholas Bailey as Marty, Adam J. Bernard as Jimmy Early, Tyrone Huntley as C.C. White and Joe Aaron Reid as Curtis Taylor Jr. Ruth Brown and Karen Mav will alternate the role of Effie at certain performances.
Dreamgirls charts the tumultuous journey of a young female singing trio from Chicago, Illinois called “The Dreams,” as they learn the hard lesson that show business is as tough as it is fabulous, and features the classic songs “And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going,” “I Am Changing,” “Listen” and “One Night Only.”
With book and lyrics by Tom Eyen and music by Henry Krieger, the original Broadway production of Dreamgirls, directed and dhoreographed by Michael Bennett, opened in 1981 and subsequently won six Tony Awards.
Rounding out the company will be Jocasta Almgill, Callum Aylott, Hugo Batista, Samara Casteallo, Chloe Chambers, Carly Mercedes Dyer, Joelle Dyson, Kimmy Edwards, Candace Furbert, Nathan Graham, Ashley Luke Lloyd, Gabriel Mokake, Abiola Ogunbiyi, Sean Parkins, Kirk Patterson, Ryan Reid, Rohan Richards, Noel Samuels, Durone Stokes and Tosh Wanogho-Maud.
The production will feature sets by Tim Hatley, costumes by Gregg Barnes, lighting by Hugh Vanstone, sound by Richard Brooker and hair by Josh Marquette.
