It’s the circle of life: tourists flock to New York for the summer, long-runners get a box office bump, crowds typically choose fireworks over shows. As is often the case, the Broadway box office took a toll over Independence Day weekend, down three shows and almost 10% of overall gross from the week before. A few productions managed an uptick, including The Lion King, which reigned supreme at $2,164,298. Just in time for the Fourth of July, Hamilton also upped its gross, surpassing $2 million for the fourth consecutive week. Meanwhile, following the closing announcements and final performances of several shows, a few big musicals from this year and beyond have struggled to keep houses full this summer: On Your Feet!, Jersey Boys and Kinky Boots each reached a capacity of less than 70%. While this doesn’t necessarily mean a closing notice is imminent, it is worth keeping an eye on these shows’ numbers.
