Birgitte Hjort Sørensen has signed on to be seduced by Liev Schreiber! The Danish actress will make her Broadway debut as Madame de Tourvel alongside Tony winners Janet McTeer and Schreiber in the Donmar Warehouse's upcoming Les Liaisons Dangereuses. Directed by the Donmar’s Josie Rourke and penned by Christopher Hampton, the revival will begin a 15-week engagement on October 8. Opening night is scheduled for October 30 at the Booth Theatre.
Sørensen previously appeared on the Donmar stage in Rourke’s 2014 production of Coriolanus opposite Tom Hiddleston; she has also appeared in the West End in Chicago. Her screen credits include Vinyl, Game of Thrones, Pitch Perfect 2, Borgen, 3 Things, Bluestone 42, Autómata, Someone You Love, The Prize Idiot, Julie, Marie Krøyer, At World’s End, The Candidate and Anja & Viktor.
Based on the 1782 novel by Pierre Choderlos de Laclos, the dark comedy follows former lovers, La Marquise de Merteuil (McTeer) and Le Vicomte de Valmont (Schreiber) as they compete in games of seduction and revenge. These merciless aristocrats toy with the hearts and reputations of innocents. Merteuil incites Valmont to corrupt the convent-educated Cecile de Volanges before her wedding night but Valmont has other designs. His target is the peerlessly virtuous and happily married Madame de Tourvel (Sørensen).
As previously reported, Mary Beth Peil will play Madame de Rosemonde.
Lindsay Duncan and Alan Rickman earned Tony nominations for the play's 1987 Broadway premiere. Glenn Close and John Malkovich headlined the 1988 movie version, renamed Dangerous Liaisons. The show was last revived on the Great White Way in 2008, starring Laura Linney and Ben Daniels.
