Musical Adaptation of The Flamingo Kid, With Grey Gardens and Gentleman's Guide Writers, Eyes Broadway

The Flamingo Kid is ready to make the Great White Way a little more beachy. A musical adaptation of the film directed and written by the late Garry Marshall has its eyes on a spring 2018 Broadway bow. The show will feature music by Scott Frankel and a book and lyrics by Robert L. Freedman.

Frankel received a Tony nomination for the score of Grey Gardens. He also composed War Paint, which is currently playing a world premiere engagement at Chicago’s Goodman Theatre. Freedman penned the lyrics and book to A Gentleman’s Guide to Love & Murder; he won a Tony Award for the latter.

The Flamingo Kid follows Jeffrey Willis, an 18-year-old Brooklynite who, against family wishes, takes a job at El Flamingo, a private beach club. It’s there he meets Phil Brody, a gin rummy champ with an alluring car business. As time goes on, Jeffrey must choose between his family’s humble roots and strong values and Brody’s easy, potentially dishonest buck.

The 1984 film starred Matt Dillon (in one of his first leading roles) as Jeffrey, as well as Richard Crenna, Hector Elizondo, Jessica Walter and Janet Jones.
