King Charles III is PBS' new Downton Abbey
God save the King! Mike Bartlett’s Tony-nominated play, King Charles III, is heading for the small screen, thanks to PBS and the BBC. The controversial work is set in the near future, exploring what happens after the Queen is dead, and after a lifetime of waiting, Prince Charles ascends the throne. Adapted by Bartlett and once again helmed by Rupert Goold, Deadline writes that the project is scheduled to premiere stateside in 2017. No word yet on casting; Tim Pigott-Smith received both Tony and Olivier nominations for his role in the stage incarnation.
Miss Saigon Screen Updates
While we await further details of the upcoming Main Stem revival of Miss Saigon, comes news that the London production was filmed a couple of years ago and will screen in British movie theaters for one-night-only on October 16, before going on sale. As previously reported, the U.K.'s leads, Eva Noblezada and Jon Jon Briones, will headline the Broadway version. Meanwhile, Danny Boyle is still attached to direct the big screen adaptation of the classic Schönberg and Boublil tuner; according to the Daily Mail, he and screenwriter Simon Beaufoy will start work on a treatment in September.
Cast Set for Strictly Ballroom the Musical
Broadway alum Sam Lips (Pippin) and Gemma Sutton (Gypsy) are ready to "Cha Cha Cha.” The pair will star in the reworked version of Baz Luhrmann’s Strictly Ballroom the Musical, directed and choreographed by Olivier winner Drew McOnie. The U.K. premiere of the tuner is scheduled to play a limited engagement at West Yorkshire Playhouse, Leeds, November 30 through January 21 and to officially open on December 6. Next stop the West End?
Meryl Streep Eyes New Mary Poppins Movie
Oscar winner Meryl Streep on the big screen with Tony winner Lin-Manuel Miranda? This might actually be happening! Variety writes that the legendary actress is in negotiations to team up with Miranda and Emily Blunt in Mary Poppins Returns. Streep would appear as Poppins’ (singing) cousin Topsy; Blunt is playing everyone’s favorite nanny, while Miranda’s a street lamplighter called Jack. Rob Marshall is on board to direct the project—he previously helmed Streep and Blunt in Into the Woods. And, just because it's Friday and we deserve some fun, here's "A Spoonful Of Sugar."
