Miguel Cervantes & Joshua Henry Talk Hamilton
Want to be in the room where it happens in Chicago? Hamilton Windy City headliners Miguel Cervantes and Joshua Henry, who will play the titular role and Aaron Burr, respectively, took part in a Facebook live video on August 2. The pair, on a break on their second day of rehearsals, covered everything from other characters they'd like to play in Lin-Manuel Miranda's Tony-winning tuner, to which Schuyler Sister is their favorite, to being ambassadors for the show by bringing it outside New York City. As the duo admit at the end: they're lucky to be alive right now!
Courtney Reed Set for It Happened in Key West Reading
Aladdin’s Courtney Reed and James Moye (On the 20th Century) will lead an industry reading of the new musical It Happened in Key West in the Big Apple on August 19. With music and lyrics by Jill Santoriello (A Tale of Two Cities), the book is by Jason Huza, Santoriello and Jeremiah James, who also conceived the project. Additional Lyrics are by Huza. Helmed by Jeff Whiting, the romantic comedy musical is inspired by shocking true events that rocked the tiny island of Key West in the 1930s. After decades of searching for the dream girl of his boyhood visions, eccentric scientist Carl finally finds Elena, only to lose the young beauty to the fatal disease of tuberculosis; he subsequently tries to bring his beloved back to life.
New Tuner From Duncan Sheik & Suzanne Vega
Another project we’re keeping an eye on...A workshop of Tony-winning Spring Awakening scribe Duncan Sheik and Grammy winner Suzanne Vega’s new musical, which follows southern writer Carson McCullers, will take place at Houston’s Alley Theatre on August 23 and August 26. We're intrigued.
Schools Can Now Apply for Lloyd Webber Grants
Know a worthy school? The first grant cycle has been launched for the American Theatre Wing’s Andrew Lloyd Webber Initiative. Grant requests of up to $100,000 will be considered for K-12 public schools, with the deadline being September 30. Final notifications of grants will be made by December 2016.
