Settle into your onesies and pass the popcorn! The season of pumpkin-spice lattes, wool coats and Halloween is fast approaching, which means a slew of new TV shows is on the way. The best part? Loads of Broadway faves are getting screen time! Here are 10 shows you should be bingeing this fall.
Masters of Sex
Premieres September 11 at 10PM EST on Showtime
Shall we dance...in the bedroom? The King and I Tony winner Kelli O’Hara is joining a long line of Broadway alums (Tony winner Annaleigh Ashford, Tony winner Rondi Reed, Allison Janney, Heléne Yorke and Alex Wyse, to name a few) on Showtime’s tantalizing Masters of Sex, nominated for three Emmys this year. That's a lot of Tony winners in one hot show!
American Horror Story
Premieres September 14 at 10PM EST on Fox
So here is what we know so far about American Horror Story’s highly mysterious sixth season: basically zilch. But here is a terrific reason to watch no matter what story unfolds: stage alums Sarah Paulson, Cheyenne Jackson, Tony winner Denis O’Hare and Angela Bassett, not to mention the Star Is Born remake’s lead Lady Gaga will appear this season. Whether the rumors are true about "The Mist" being this go-around’s theme, that cast has already got us hooked.
Bull
Premieres September 20 at 9PM EST on CBS
Here comes the General (a.k.a. Christopher Jackson)! And Geneva Carr! And Sarah Steele! CBS’ new dramedy includes this trio of Broadway alums and is based on the early days of Phil McGraw (you know him as Dr. Phil). Jackson plays an all-American lineman turned stylist who helps Dr. Jason Bull prep clients for trial; Carr plays a therapist on his team. Steele has been tapped for a guest spot. Michael Weatherly plays Dr. Bull, the head of the trial consulting firm.
Empire
Premieres September 21 at 9PM EST on Fox
Taye Diggs is suiting up for the screen once more! This time, mom’s also in tow; Tony winner Phylicia Rashad will play his character’s powerhouse mother on Fox’s Empire, which offers a look into the glitz and grind of the hip-hop industry and is nominated for three Emmy Awards this year. Diggs will play prominent city councilman Angelo Dubois; we can only hope he offers those silky vocals on an Empire track!
Black-ish
Premieres September 21 at 9:30PM EST on ABC
Hamilton Tony winner Daveed Diggs is slated to join small screen hit Black-ish this fall. Set to play an entitled hipster named Johan who’s returned from France (sounds like a Founding Father we all know very well), we’re super stoked to watch Diggs flex those comedic chops of his on Anthony Anderson and Kenya Barris’ whip-smart series (that, and rock a man bun).
How to Get Away with Murder
Premieres September 22 at 10PM EST on ABC
Tony and Emmy winner Viola Davis may have that first Oscar on the way following her performance in the upcoming Fences movie, which will be released wide to theaters on December 25. In the meantime, you can catch her in the comfort of your own home as the formidable professor and defense attorney Annalise Keating in Shonda Rhimes’ bloody good How to Get Away with Murder. And yes, The King and I's Conrad Ricamora is returning as charming techie Oliver Hampton.
Younger
Premieres September 28 at 9PM EST on TV Land
Watching Tony winner Sutton Foster rock a rainbow of lip shades never gets old on TV Land’s Younger. Season three finds her character Liza in a love triangle—and based on the steamy trailer, that’s not the worst place to be. See how much longer she can hold onto her secret in Sex and the City creator Darren Star’s current hit series. P.S. You can see Foster live in Sweet Charity later this fall.
Crazy Ex-Girlfriend
Premieres October 21 at 9PM EST on The CW
Rachel Bloom’s instant cult fave has always flaunted its theater dorkiness. Broadway's Santino Fontana and Donna Lynne Champlin have been major series staples, while Lea Salonga and Tovah Feldshuh are just a few of the stage legends who dropped by West Covina in season one. We also happen to know Bloom and School of Rock Tony nominee Alex Brightman were college buds, so we’ll definitely be on the lookout for more Broadway alums guesting and glorious show tunes this season!
Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life
Available November 25 at 12AM PT on Netflix
Amy Sherman-Palladino’s fast-talking, heart-warming, coffee-praising series is back! What's even more exciting is seeing Tony winners Sutton Foster, Christian Borle and Jeanine Tesori, Fun Home composer, who will score a show within a show in the upcoming Netflix revival. Broadway fave Kerry Butler also joins the cast, which always boasts Broadway alums like Lauren Graham and Tony winner Kelly Bishop.
Drunk History with Lin-Manuel Miranda
Airs November 29 on Comedy Central
He’s definitely not throwing away his shot(s)! Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda will raise a glass (or four) when he sits down to narrate the rivalry between Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr on Comedy Central’s Drunk History. No matter what he slurs, we know he got it right at the Richard Rodgers Theatre.
