From Goop to Broadway producer? Gwyneth Paltrow is backing Head Over Heels, a musical featuring the songs of 1980s girl group The Go-Go’s. According to the New York Post, she was one of the producers behind a recent industry reading of the show, which was directed by Tony winner Michael Mayer (Spring Awakening).
With a book by Jeff Whitty (Avenue Q), music and lyrics by the Go-Go's and direction by Ed Sylvanus Iskandar, the tuner made its world premiere this past summer at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival.
Inspired by Sir Philip Sidney’s 16th-century pastoral romance, Arcadia, the new musical is an Elizabethan love story turned on its head (familiar material to Paltrow). A duke. A mysterious prophecy. Two daughters: one mobbed by suitors, the other...not so much. And all set to the beat of 1980s pop icons the Go-Go’s.
Originally fronted by Belinda Carlisle, The Go-Go's were the first and only all-female band that both wrote their own songs and played their own instruments to top the Billboard album charts. Hits included "Our Lips Are Sealed," "We Got the Beat," "How Much More" and "Head Over Heels," below.
