Ready for a real nice clambake, London? Tony and Broadway.com Audience Choice Award winner Alfie Boe and Katherine Jenkins will star as Billy Bigelow and Julie Jordan, respectively, in Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Carousel. Directed by Lonny Price (Sunset Boulevard), the production will play a limited engagement April 7, 2017 through May 13. Opening night is scheduled for April 11 at ENO’s London Coliseum.
Boe won a Broadway.com Audience Choice award for his Valjean in Les Miz and was last seen on the Main Stem in Finding Neverland. He made his Great White Way debut as Rodolfo in Baz Luhrmann’s La Boheme, for which he and his co-stars received a special Tony Award in 2003. He also played the role of Valjean in the 25th Anniversary Concert at London’s O2 Arena in October 2010 and went on to lead the original West End production of the show. His live opera appearances include The Pearl Fishers at the English National Opera and Romeo ET Juliette at the Royal Opera House.
Opera star Jenkins has recorded ten studio albums, with Second Nature and Living a Dream receiving Classic Brit Awards Album of the Year. Her most recent album, Home Sweet Home, was her seventh studio album to reach number 1 in the U.K.. She has performed for the Pope, Presidents and Royalty including The Queen’s 90th birthday celebrations earlier this year. Jenkins has appeared extensively on television both in the U.K. and the U.S. including the series Popstar to Operastar and Dancing With the Stars.
Fifteen years after getting caught up in an armed robbery and taking his own life, the charming carousel barker Billy Bigelow gets a chance to return to earth and make amends. Discovering that his daughter Louise has grown into a lonely, troubled teenager, haunted by her father’s legacy, Billy vows to restore pride to his family.
ENO’s 40-piece orchestra and chorus will accompany the cast in this semi-staged production. Further casting will be announced later.
