Two movies premiering, one mixtape dropping...we'll get back to you on the partridge in the pear tree.
December 2 - The Hamilton Mixtape Drops
Hamilton was originally Lin-Manuel Miranda’s concept album about the 10-dollar founding father. That Mixtape is now a follow-up to the revolutionary Broadway hit, boasting vocals from music industry heavy-hitters like Usher, Sia and more. The Atlantic Records album's early track releases already have Hamil-fans hooked.
Social Media Manager Caitlyn Gallip
“I can't wait to hear this in its entirety. Usher’s 'Wait for It' has already slayed my existence, and I’m sure I’ll have to be picked up off the floor after I hear Regina Spektor and Ben Folds sing 'Dear Theodosia.'"
December 7 - Hairspray Live! Airs
Tony winners Kenny Leon and Jerry Mitchell direct and choreograph (respectively) NBC's Hairspray Live! while Harvey Fierstein returns to the role for which he garnered a 2003 Tony Award. A fresh-faced Maddie Baillio lands her first big role as Tracy Turnblad alongside faves like Kristin Chenoweth, Jennifer Hudson and Ariana Grande. You can't stop the live tweet(s)!
Editor-in-Chief Paul Wontorek
“NBC is taking a big cue from the success of Fox’s Grease: Live, broadcasting this fantastic musical from Hollywood backlots. It's a stellar cast, but the main event is Harvey Fierstein returning as Mama Edna.”
December 9 - Mozart in the Jungle Returns
Amazon Prime’s Mozart in the Jungle will start its third season, and romance could be in the air during the orchestra's trip to Europe. Starring Bernadette Peters, Gael Garcia Bernal, Saffron Burrows and Lola Kirke, Jungle is based on Blair Tindall’s memoir and offers an inside look at the symphony.
News Reporter Ryan McPhee
“Mozart in the Jungle is a binge-able gem. It’s not an entirely reliable view of the classical world, but then again, who loved Smash for its accuracy? Also: Bernadette Peters screaming in a moving gondola.”
December 9 - La La Land Hits Theaters
Oscar nominees Emma Stone, Ryan Gosling and Whiplash director Damien Chazelle come together to bring a song-and-dance romance about a wannabee actress and a passionate jazz musician in Los Angeles. Theater fans will be excited to note that Broadway's Benj Pasek and Justin Paul contributed to the score.
Senior Editor Imogen Lloyd Webber
“La La Land is the perfect 21st-century movie musical. Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling are magical in the film, which features lyrics by Dear Evan Hansen's Pasek and Paul. A likely Oscar contender and a must-see!”
December 11 - In Transit Opens
In Transit, an a cappella musical, which includes songs from Frozen songwriter Kristen Anderson-Lopez and more, opens at the Circle in the Square Theatre. Tony winner Kathleen Marshall directs and choreographs the tuner, which features Telly Leung, Justin Guarini, James Snyder and more as their characters navigate the tunnels of New York City.
Site Producer Joanne Villani
“As a subway rider myself, I’ve always been fascinated by the way a train car can illustrate a city. I’m excited to see how something many of us experience every day is transformed into a musical.”
December 18 - Last Chance for BOOM!
Stage fave Nick Blaemire headlines the off-Broadway revival of Jonathan Larson’s autobiographical Tick, Tick…BOOM! Lilli Cooper and George Salazar complete the cast in the Keen Company production, which is currently playing at off-Broadway’s Acorn Theatre on Theatre Row.
Editorial Assistant Lindsey Sullivan
"This production is a gorgeous testament to Jonathan Larson’s legacy. It's an incredibly relatable story of being terrified in your twenties that demands to be felt. Plus, Nick Blaemire can saaang!"
December 25 - Fences Hits Theaters
Denzel Washington and Viola Davis reunite for August Wilson’s Fences; they garnered Tony Awards for their respective roles in the 2010 Broadway revival. Fences marks Washington's third directorial undertaking, and the film adaptation has already sparked a great deal of Oscar buzz.
Managing Editor Beth Stevens
“August Wilson is one of the greats. To see Denzel Washington and Viola Davis revisit their Tony-winning performances in this deeply satisfying piece will ‘fill all them empty spaces’ in your heart.”
