This new musical spoof is sticking around off-Broadway. Amas Musical Theatre's recent premiere staging of Romeo & Bernadette: A Musical Tale of Verona and Brooklyn will move to Theatre Row next month. Previews will begin on March 17 ahead of an official opening night set for March 26. The production has also announced an original cast album, to be released in late March.
Directed by Justin Ross Cohen and featuring a book by Mark Saltzman and tunes based on classic Italian melodies, the new comedic take on Shakespeare's classic tale finds Romeo in 1960 Brooklyn, chasing a girl he believes is his beloved Juliet. But it's actually Bernadette, the beautiful, foul-mouthed daughter of a crime family.
The full original cast will move to Theatre Row, including longtime Mamma Mia! star Judy McLane as Camille Penza, with Nikita Burshteyn as Romeo, Anna Kostakis as Bernadette, Carlos Lopez as Sal Penza, Michael Marotta as Don Del Canto, Michael Notardonato as Dino Del Canto/Brooklyn Guy, Ari Raskin as Donna Dubachek, Troy Valjean Rucker as Viola/Duke/Roz, Zach Schanne as Tito Titone and Viet Vo as Lips.
The production features music direction by Aaron Gandy, scenic design by Walt Spangler, costume design by Fabio Toblini and Joseph Shrope, lighting design by Ken Billington, sound design by One Dream Sound and musical supervision/orchestrations by Steve Orich.
