After a run of almost two years in three different Broadway theaters, Alfred Hitchcock's The 39 Steps has posted its closing notice. The comedy thriller, adapted by Patrick Barlow from the classic novel and film and directed by Maria Aitken, will play its final performance on January 10, 2010. The show will have played 771 performances upon closing, making it the longest-running Broadway play in the past seven years.
The 39 Steps opened at the American Airlines Theatre on January 15, 2008. The production moved to the Cort Theatre in April of 2008 and moved yet again in January 2009 to the Helen Hayes Theatre, where it will finish its run. It was nominated for six 2008 Tony Awards, including Best Play and Best Director.
The play currently stars Sean Mahon as Richard Hannay; Jill Paice as Annabella Schmidt, Pamela and Margaret; Jeffrey Kuhn as Man #1 and Arnie Burton as Man #2. The production features scenic and costume design by Peter McKintosh, lighting design by Kevin Adams and sound design by Mic Pool.
Mix Alfred Hitchcock's cinematic masterpiece with a juicy spy novel. Add the manic dash of vintage Monty Python and you have The 39 Steps, equal parts whodunit, espionage thriller and quick-change comedy. Seeking a frivolous night out at the theater, Richard Hannay is lured into a world of intrigue by a mysterious woman claiming to be a spy. When she winds up dead in his flat, he flees London with the police hot on his trail.
The 39 Steps continues its run in London’s West End and embarks upon a U.S. national tour this November, beginning in New Haven, CT.
